ATTICS International Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy

These policies are developed exclusively for ATTICS International. Any copying, sharing, or reuse without written consent is not permitted.

Purpose

ATTICS International recognizes that individuals may acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies through formal education, professional experience, workplace practice, self-learning, or prior training.

The purpose of this Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy is to provide a fair, transparent, and evidence-based process to assess and recognize prior learning, reducing unnecessary duplication of training while maintaining the integrity and quality of ATTICS International qualifications and certifications.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Training and educational programs
  • Personnel certification schemes
  • Competency-based assessments
  • Professional qualification pathways

It applies to:

  • Students, trainees, and certification candidates
  • Corporate clients sponsoring learners
  • Approved training and assessment centres
  • Assessors and certification decision-makers

Policy Statement

ATTICS International shall:

  • Provide equal opportunity for applicants to request RPL
  • Assess prior learning objectively and fairly
  • Ensure RPL decisions are evidence-based
  • Maintain academic and certification integrity
  • Prevent unfair advantage or lowering of standards
  • Communicate RPL outcomes transparently

Definition of RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process of identifying, assessing, and validating an individual’s existing knowledge, skills, and experience against defined learning outcomes or competency standards.

RPL Distinction from Credit Transfer

RPL is distinguished from formal credit transfer arrangements with other institutions; while RPL assesses experiential learning against competency standards, credit transfer recognizes formal qualifications from recognized educational bodies through established articulation agreements.

Eligibility for RPL

Applicants may apply for RPL if they have:

  • Relevant work experience
  • Prior training or qualifications
  • Professional certifications
  • Demonstrated practical competence

RPL Application Process

Submission of RPL Application

Applicant completes RPL request form and provides supporting evidence.

Evidence Review

Evidence may include:

  • Certificates and transcripts
  • Employment records
  • Work portfolios
  • Project reports
  • References or testimonials

Assessment of Evidence

Qualified assessors evaluate evidence against learning outcomes or competency standards.

Additional Assessment (if required)

Practical demonstrations, interviews, or challenge tests may be conducted.

Decision and Approval

RPL outcome approved by certification or academic decision-makers.

Communication of Outcome

Applicant informed in writing of the decision.

Evidence Validation Protocol

All submitted evidence undergoes validation including verification of authenticity, relevance to current competency standards, and currency (typically within the last five years unless supplemented by recent professional development), with validation steps documented in the assessment record.

Possible RPL Outcomes

  • Full recognition (exemption from specific modules or assessments)
  • Partial recognition (credit for some components)
  • No recognition (insufficient evidence)

Partial Recognition Implementation

For partial recognition outcomes, a personalized learning plan identifies remaining competency gaps and required assessment activities, with clear timelines and support mechanisms documented in the RPL decision letter to the applicant.

Fees

RPL application fees may apply to cover assessment and administrative costs. Fee details shall be published transparently.

Fee Transparency and Appeals

RPL fee structures are published annually, including assessment fees, potential additional verification costs, and refund policies for unsuccessful applications, with fee-related complaints addressed through the standard complaints procedure.

Appeals

Applicants may appeal RPL decisions through ATTICS International’s Complaints & Appeals Policy.

Confidentiality and Data Protection

All RPL applications and evidence shall be handled confidentially in line with ATTICS International’s Data Protection Policy (GDPR-aligned).

Quality Assurance

RPL decisions are monitored through:

  • Internal Quality Assurance reviews
  • Assessor moderation
  • Audit and accreditation reviews

RPL Decision Consistency Monitoring

RPL decisions are monitored for consistency through annual sampling of assessments, moderation across assessors, and analysis of approval rates by applicant demographics, with findings used to refine assessment criteria and assessor training.

Compliance with International Standards

This policy aligns with:

  • ISO 21001:2025 – Fair learner recognition practices
  • ISO/IEC 17024:2012 – Competence-based certification fairness
